Chapter 17

When Olivia woke up, she slowly rolled off her cot. The room was filled with the quiet sleeping sounds of her travelling companions. Directly beside her, Joyce was rolled onto her side, her sleeping face pointed directly toward her. Olivia wasn’t sure how she knew, but she was very aware that it was early. She knew she hadn’t slept much but, in that same way, she also knew she was not going to be able to go back to sleep if she stayed there on the cot.

She leaned over and gave Joyce a kiss on the head as she left the room. As she walked out into the little bullpen area of the Starker Police Department, she checked the small clock on the wall to the right. It was 5:50 in the morning. And though she thought she was the first one awake, she already smelled coffee coming from the small kitchen area in the back.

She made her way down the hallway and came to the kitchen, where she saw Sheriff Jimmy sitting at a small plastic table. He was doing absolutely nothing, just sitting there with a cup of coffee between his hands, staring at the tabletop. He looked up when Olivia came into the room, offering her a sleepy smile.

“You an early riser?” Jimmy asked

“Hardly. This whole ordeal is teaching me that I apparently can’t sleep in whenever I’m in an unfamiliar place.”

With a weary smile, Jimmy nodded over to the coffee maker. “Help yourself. There’s also some eggs and bacon in the mini-fridge. Maybe we can send your travelling party off with a hearty breakfast.”

Olivia almost objected, stating that he did not have to go out of his way to spoil them. But she also knew where he’d take that. Might as well use up the food before it expires, he’d say. It’s not like there are a lot of folks around to eat it. So rather than argue or object, Olivia decided it might be best to just play along.

“Point me to a frying pan and I’ll be happy to help.”

For the next several minutes, Olivia and Jimmy set about the little kitchen area to make a breakfast befitting a long day on the road. There was no stove, but a well-used griddle and an old toaster oven. They set up in silence, and Olivia wondered if the events of the previous night were finally starting to truly settle in on Jimmy. Not only had he lost three acquaintances, but he also found himself with a war to fight. And with the fight finished, all he had to look forward to was a dead town. He’d already turned down an offer to join them, so she had a decent picture of what the remainder of his days might look like.

The griddle had just warmed up and Olivia was cracking the first of the eggs when Paul entered the breakroom. His hair was in disarray and though he looked tired, he’d already put on what Olivia was starting to think of as his getting-down-to-business face.
